Guardians of the Galaxy Cake

guardians of the galaxy movie cake

In case you haven’t seen it yet, let me be the first to tell you. Guardians of the Galaxy is the best movie of the summer… possibly the whole year! I absolutely loved it! It was funny, action packed and there was a great little romance (that didn’t feel like the typical cheesy variety you find in a super hero movie). So I couldn’t resist trying to squeeze in a little movie themed dessert into our line up this week. So, if you’re looking for a Guardians themed party, look no further than right here! ~Rachel

We’re getting a little help from the store by using cake box mix! Use what every flavor you like (I love a good funfetti cake). Bake up two boxes, in a 11×17 rectangle pan, one box per pan, so you end up with two layers. funfetti cake

Allow both layers to cool down completely. Invert one layer onto a rectangular cake board. Dollop a liberal amount of store bought frosting and spread it out in an even layer.

how to frost a cake

Place the other cooled layer on top and frost the entire cake, including the sides. You don’t want to frost it like you were frosting a finished cake. You only want a thin layer coating the cake, just so the fondant has something to stick to.

Place the cake in the fridge and allow to chill for at least 2 hours. This will let the frosting firm up and will prevent the cake from sliding.

Roll out the black fondant into a thin rectangle, bigger than the cake itself, and then drape it over. Smooth out the fondant on the top and sides of the cake, as best you can. Cut off the excess.

Use the white fondant to cut out a “label” and wheels for the tape of the cassette. Use the remaining black fondant to cut out the circles and little details of the cassette tape.

Chic Tip: Adhere the fondant pieces to the black fondant cake with a small brush and a little bit of water!

Roll out the red fondant and cut out long strips to create that cool design on the label!

cassette tape birthday cake

The cassette tape in the movie has the title “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” written on the label. To make this cake as authentic as possible, make sure you write that at the top with a gel icing pen. You can find that at a craft store or at most large grocery stores.

That’s it! The cake is done! Looks just like the cake from the Guardian of the Galaxy movie. You can impress all of your family and friends with this cake, plus it was easy to make.

You can also write “Happy Birthday” at the top of the label with the name of the special birthday person.

cool birthday cakes

This is the kind of cake that will wow the guests at your next birthday party. Take all the help you can get with the boxed cake mixes, and store bought frosting! Also, don’t spend time trying to dye your own fondant, that sounds like such a hassle! Use the already colored fondant. The best part is that you only need three colors! Black, white and red.

If you’re a big fan of the comic book and really enjoyed the movie, or even if you’ve been dying to go check it out, this Guardians of the Galaxy Cake is the way to go. Even if no one’s birthday is coming up, go ahead and make it anyway. It is pretty cool!

Ingredients
  1. 2 cake box mixes
  2. 6 large eggs
  3. 2 cups water
  4. 2/3 cup oil
  5. 2 tubs vanilla frosting
  6. 1 (24oz) box black fondant
  7. 1 (24oz) box white fondant
  8. 1 (24oz) box red fondant
  9. 1 icing pen
  10. powdered sugar, for rolling out fondant
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 11x17 or 9x13-inch rectangle cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together both cake box mixes, eggs, water and oil. Stir until completely smooth and lump-free. Divide the cake batter between the two prepared cake pans. Bake as directed on the box, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow to cool down completely.
  3. Invert one of the cake layers onto a cardboard cake board. Add a heaping amount of frosting and spread out into an even layer. Top with the second cake layer. Frost the entire cake, including the sides with the remaining frosting. You only want a very thin layer on the cake. Chill for at least 2 hours in the fridge.
  4. Remove the cake from the fridge. Lightly dust a work surface with powdered sugar and roll out the black fondant out into a large rectangle, bigger than the cake itself to ensure you completely cover it. Transfer the rolled fondant onto the cake and smooth it out on the top and sides as best you can. Cut off the excess.
  5. Roll out the white fondant and cut out the label and wheels of the tape. Adhere those small pieces (as shown in pictures above) with a bit of water and a small paint brush. Roll out the red fondant and cut out long thing strips for the red stripe design.
  6. Write the lettering with a icing pen. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. Chic Note: Fondant covered cakes can be stored wrapped loosely in plastic at room temperature. Fondant doesn't do well in the fridge!
