no melt kids ice packsMost of us moms have some kind of ice pack in the freezer. They’re on hand for those times when our kiddos fall down, or bump their head, or dream up a mythical ailment that can only be solved with a hug and the application of something cold. My issue with those ice packs is that once frozen they’re hard as a rock and it only takes a 5 year old about 3 minutes to understand that it can be used as a weapon. The other issue is that as they start to melt, they drip condensation all over the house.

My answer? Freeze a sponge!

make your own ice pack for kidsSponges are lightweight, even when frozen so the kids can’t hurt themselves. They freeze to a brisk temperature but never get so cold that it hurts when applied to skin (remember the kid who froze his tongue to the lamp post?) Lastly, as the water starts to melt out of the sponge, it’s reabsorbed so you don’t have drips all over your house.

I suggest cutting up the sponges into fun shapes and using different colors! ~Rachel
