Kahlua Eggnog Cocktail

Eggnog was one of those things that perplexed me as a kid.  Why on earth would you want to drink a beverage with eggs?  Growing up, I only liked my eggs one way– and that was sunny side up.

I have since learned the delicious-ness that is eggnog.  Eggnog spiked with a splash of alcohol is a wonderful and warming holiday treat.  Traditionally, eggnog is made using eggs, sugar, milk, cream, nutmeg and cinnamon.  I often think of melted ice cream when I try to explain eggnog to first-timers.  Its sweet, rich, and creamy.

My family usually serves eggnog with rum.  This year I’ve add coffee liqueur to make it more exciting.  Kahlua has very little caffeine- meaning you don’t have to worry about drinking it late at night.  When I turned 21, Kahlua was one of my favorites.  My roommates and I experimented adding a splash of it with everything: soy milk, Diet Coke, chocolate milkshakes.  But the best combination, in my opinion, is Kahlua and eggnog.  This eggnog is sure to please all the coffee drinkers in my family.

I have always purchased the store-bought eggnog from the festive cartons at the market.  One day I will eventually try to make it from scratch.  Anyone have a recipe they’d like to share?!

Maryanne’s Chic Tip: Best thing about store-bought eggnog- it makes for a super easy eggnog ice cream.  Simply pour the chilled eggnog into your ice cream maker and freeze according to your machine’s manufacturing instructions.

Kahlua Eggnog, serves 1

3 oz store-bought eggnog

1 oz dark rum of your choice

1 oz Kahlua, or other coffee liqueur

1 Tbsp milk (optional, if drink is too strong for your taste)

whipped cream, to garnish

freshly ground nutmeg, to garnish

cinnamon sticks or cinnamon bark, to garnish

1. In a mug add eggnog, dark rum, coffee liqueur and milk.  If desired, add ice. Stir to combine.

2.  Dollop with whipped cream.  Sprinkle ground nutmeg on top.    Garnish with cinnamon stick or cinnamon bark.

3. Multiply recipe as need to serve a large crowd.  Liquids can be mixed ahead of time and stored in the fridge until ready to serve.  Garnish individual servings with whipped cream and nutmeg right before serving.

About The Chic

Back in 2004 when I was looking to name my events company, I stumbled across the word 'Chic' in an old dictionary. The definition was: “a fashionable lifestyle, ideology, or pursuit”. I fell in love with the word and the idea that chic is the pursuit of something better, prettier, or cooler than you are today. Chic isn’t a state of being or even a destination, chic is the journey you take on the way to something greater. ~Rachel
