Kids to be grateful

The holidays are a wonderful time to reflect on all the goodness of the previous year. There is truly so much to be thankful for…a roof over our heads, our families, good friends, and the security of making a decent living. It is the perfect time to give back, whether it’s donating your time or your money. This year, I challenge you to take it one step further and to encourage your kids to do the same. Their “littleness” shouldn’t preclude them from learning the concept of helping the needy. Here are 10 simple ways to help them become the little philanthropists they were meant to be!

Teach them to donate. Have them round up all their old toys and give them to charity.

The Art of Gratefulness. Teach them what it means to be truly thankful for the gifts they receive.

Sponsor a child. There are so many needy children in the world. Sponsor a child overseas and have them write letters to him/her.

Participate in a charitable event together. Whether it’s a fun run, helping out at your local food bank, or visiting a children’s shelter, it will help your child see there are plenty of opportunities to help others.

A gift of $10. Give your child ten dollars and tell them they can use it any way they wish, as long as it benefits others.

Help thy neighbor. Go around the neighborhood in search for things to do. Rake leaves, pull weeds, shovel snow.

Visit a convalescent home. Bake cookies and spend some time with folks who might be lonely this time of year.

Give blood. Explain to your child why you’re giving blood and what you hope to accomplish.

A mini fundraiser. Help your child set up a bake sale with all proceeds going to a charity of their choice.

Say a prayer. Take a moment to say a little prayer for all the needy, hurting people in the world.
