Cosmetic Counter_Featured

I used to practically hyperventilate before approaching a cosmetic counter. Heart beating, palms sweating, I would rehearse over and over again my head, “I’m just looking” as I closed in on the swarming ladies dressed in black trying my best not to make eye contact.

Twenty minutes later with a totally not me “half-face” makeover, I’d awkwardly emerge from the chair (how did I end up there?) will a bag full of products and a heart full of regret, vowing to never buy makeup again.

Now, not every run in with the cosmetic cream team is a bad one. But let’s admit it, bellying up the beauty counter, or even circling the vicinity admiring the pretty products can be quite intimidating. So what’s a lady got to do to be able to peruse in peace? With years of beauty knowledge under my belt and a street-smart critical eye, it takes a lot for a product to wow me and for a cosmetic counter salesperson to shake me in my boots.

So, here are 8 Golden Rules for navigating the beauty store waters that I’ve learned along the way. ~Brandee

Ask The Right Questions
Instead of asking what’s most popular, what they sell most or what’s new, stick to questions like, “Can you tell me more about this product?” “Have you tried it?” and the telling question, “Do you like it?” It will save you both a lot of time and will help you navigate your options quickly.

Explore Every Corner
Don’t be quick to assume that the best products are front and center. Some of my best finds have been in the obscure corners of a cosmetic store, behind all the fancy displays. Check the bottom shelf too. This may indicate that the product is less popular, but has nothing to do with its effectiveness.

It’s Ok To Look, But (Please!) Don’t Touch
Beauty counters are most alluring because everything is out in the open! While this is great for display, I wouldn’t advise sampling directly from the counter or shelf if the products are opened. The q-tips and tissues are a good touch, but it’s best to ask for help to avoid the massive amounts of germs. Ask the salesperson to help you test. They should use alcohol swabs or fresh brushes (don’t be afraid to ask!). You can also ask to sample from a new bottle.

Sample, Sample, Sample
Did you know that you can take home a sample of almost anything, even perfumes? I never get greedy in this area, but I don’t shy away from asking for a sample if I am genuinely interested in a product. It’s much better to test it out for a few days and come back confidently to make your purchase. For me, this works best for fragrances. It’s helpful to see how a scent changes on your skin and how long it wears throughout the day.

Get To Know Your Skin & Hair
Perhaps the most important thing to do is get to know your skin and hair type. That way you can navigate products and ingredients with a sharp eye. You can also know if a salesperson is unknowingly recommending the wrong product for you. For example, I am allergic to salicylic acid, an ingredient found in tons of products. I can easily eliminate the product pool by only asking to see the products without this mixed in.

Free Is Really Free
Yes, it is true that by offering to apply makeup for you, salespeople are hoping for the sale. But, it is perfectly ok not to buy, just be honest and confident. Here’s what I do. Recently, I asked for help applying a new concealer on the market. After applied, I told the salesperson I liked it, but wanted to see how it wore throughout the day. She pushed back with a few helpful insights about the product, but I thanked her and told her I knew what I was looking for and would be back if it worked. Yes, it’s a bit awkward, but it’s also over in about two seconds and you’re not stuck with products just because you didn’t want to hurt feelings.

Don’t Like It? You Can Return It
Most people don’t know you can return products so they get stuck with unused bottles crowding the bathroom cabinet. Double check the store policy, but most of them receive returns with proof of purchase even if it has been used. You can usually tell if a product is a good fit after about 2 weeks. If is causes irritation or isn’t the right color, take it back with confidence.

How To Spot A Golden Salesperson
Most beauty consultants are trained in sales technique and less on product knowledge and makeup application (that comes later) so you will be able to spot a true beauty expert in no time flat. Not only will they know more about the product than can be read on the back of the box, they will take time to ask questions to understand your specific product needs. The best of the best will show you both high end and lower priced options and will be totally honest when something is not a good match on you.

Brandee’s Chic Tip: Have you found an honest and knowledgable beauty expert? Be loyal to them! They will get to know your preferences, including what products are a good fit and you can get the inside scoop. If they are on commission, do your best to give them the credit for a sale and while you’re at it tell your friends. Snap a pic of you during your next adventure to the counters and upload it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #TheChic so we can see it too!
